Thursday March 18, life can be great!

Thursday comes with more sun and a nice low 70s. I decide to start in 6th Street in Opal divine’s FH, where lovely Pigeon O’Brien puts on a show with sets by a lot of my good friends from Austin like Tim Henderson, Jim Patton and Sherry Brokus, George Ensle. Also performing are Matt Harlan (he’s great – listen to his cd ‘’ Tips & Compliments’), Jeff Talmadge/Bradley Kopp (watch for Jeff’s new one ‘Kind of everything’, will be out soon), Amanda Shires/Rod Picott.

My next move is back to Jovita’s to see Carrie Rodriguez perform with her new band and later Ray Wiley Hubbard with his sun on lead guitar. A packed Jovita’s gave him a standing ovation, Ray Wiley is mighty popular in Austin. My dinner goal is NeWorlDeli on Guadeloupe/41st St, where I enjoy a fabulous corned beef Reuben. Jim Patton and Sherry Brokus host a full day program of great singer-songwriters here. So I witness sets by Sara Hickman, Kim Miller, Rex Foster (with a guest performance by steel guitarist Kim Deschamps) and Will T. Massey/Richard Bowden (I love Will’s song ‘Highway hearse’). The evening is dedicated to the official program at Antone’s. The show was due to start at 8pm, but after waiting in an outside line for over 45 minutes we were called in just after 8.30

It was worth waiting, because Jim Lauderdale put on a great show to present his forthcoming CD ‘Patchwork River’ (scheduled May 11th) with guest appearances by Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin. His 5 piece band rocked like a well oiled machine and Jim was in wonderful shape, contacting his audience like no one can. Next up is young songstress Elizabeth Cook, doing a fine show with her nice band, and supported in a couple of songs by Buddy Miller. After her show I walk back to the car (15 minutes this time, rather lucky again) and drive home in a happy mood. Life can be great!
