Saturday March 20, celebrations Blue Rock Studio

You know it happens every now and again, if the wind changes and blows from the North the cold comes in from up there and there are no East-West orientated mountains to prevent it from travelling south. The venue managers need the sun and the nice temperature during the festival, most of the parties and showcases during daytime of course are scheduled to be outside and of course the consumption of soft drinks and beers rises to agreeable proportions if the sun is out and doing her job.

Saturday March 20 is one of these bad days. Besides having a maximum of only 44F (just above the freezing point) it rained most of the day, so many outside shows were cancelled or moved to a suitable indoor spot.

I am invited to celebrate the fourth birthday of Blue Rock Studios in the Hill Country near Wimberley. And the music there is played indoors. Most of the Red House artists I saw on Friday play here again, so I can fill in the gaps left after Friday afternoon’s party in Mother Egan’s. With pleasure I listen to Kim Miller (Marvin/David), Carrie Elkin (with Danny Schmidt) and Natalia Zukerman again. New to me are a full set by Colin Brooks, a wonderful set by Wailin’ Jenny’s beautiful Ruth Moody (her solo debut, ‘The Garden’, will be released soon), wonderful young Grace Pettis, Blue Rock owner Billy Crocket and Anaïs Mitchell.

The lovely afternoon in the enchanting atmosphere of Blue Rock (it’s a pity it is too cold to stroll in the enormous garden) closes with surprise performances by Eliza Gilkyson, Lynn Miles and The Pines. Because of the cold weather I decide to take the evening off and to go to bed early.

I was lucky to see the full show of ‘Texas Music Extravaganza: The San Antonio sound’ on television. This film is about the influence musicians like Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers and Flaco Jimenez had on the development of ‘chicano rock’. Featured are Doug’s son Sawn, Augie Meyers, Raul Malo and Flaco Jimenez.
